Rodent OMG, Olympia Washington must be a veritable rain forest awash in unique "folk" singers.. This was lovely on first hearing, and definitely needs more a lot more aural attention.

C Both the songs and the production are beautiful. Lyrics are distinct and I can't immediately think of other songs like it. Background vocals reminds me of old Brazilian bossa nova. Favorite track: Aurora.

Josiah Harrist At least listen to Virginia. It's such a gorgeous song. Favorite track: Virginia.

Stevie Upon revisiting Eleanor on a tour, I thought at first -- being an addict of hyperactive electronic music -- I might not like her newer, calmer, more introspective style.

But this recording let me really focus on the memorable melodies and moods. The timbres are so perfectly warm and pure, the arrangements so simple yet dead on. Like a thick blanket alone with its own thoughts. Favorite track: Virginia.

((small howl)) Gorgeous.. Brilliant engineering by Nicholas Wilbur and percussion and background vocals by Allyson Foster, Paul Benson, and Phil Elverum. DREAM TEAM. Favorite track: Fourteen.

Fourteen 03:15
I found a young girl in the forest Not one day past fourteen years old Looks like she gave into the mountains Been gone for days I try to call her but she shys away from me But her eyes lock with mine and stay They telling me “Follow now and try to keep up Because I’m gonna run” She knows the country like the back of her hand Rain, grass, and dirt have stained her skin She only lingers at the top of the hills To catch the wind I know your skin is calloused right to your bone And there are scars that mark your route But are we running from or running to face? Or we run through?

Virginia 03:36
Oh Virginia Eyes of fire Take me with you Into town Oh Virginia Sweet as water I can climb in With the dogs Oh Virginia Your strands of hair Are filled with air I don’t mind your muddy truck Just take me with you Take me with you Into town They don’t get me Or my stories I’m better fit for The city It’s there, they’ll find me There, they’ll love me There, they’ll see me Oh Virginia I’ll clear the wood chips So I can sit And I don’t mind the longer route Just take me with you Take me with you Into town Oh Virginia Straight like metal I got no money But I know these hills I can tell you Where to pull off And I can show you the shapes in the stars We can camp out By the river And I’ll build a fire I’ve got good eye to catch a fish But take me with you Cuz I can’t stand it Oh Virginia

Aurora 04:30
You recorded a song into the rocks Left in layers of stripes on the seafloor It reverses in intervals, a push come to pull After hundreds of thousands of years The melody is rising from the Earth’s inner core Up high until it’s hit by a solar flare A glowing storm like fuegal horns, it wakes up the night But approaching reverse, the shield of sound becomes weaker When you play it from me I become confused I have forgotten my location and route When you play it for me I am unaligned Like under high voltage power lines When you play it for me Will I radiate? And shorten my lifespan by a couple decades When you play it for me Will I emanate? And sitting beside me gives you a headache When you play it for me Will I become extinct? And the land will surrender, and the oceans will sink When you play it for me And it reaches its end Will it vanish completely Or in many places ascend?

Don’t know if I ever told you But once a wind came to rattle the windows And I wasn’t ready, Oh no, I’m never And something in me slipped away Oh bury me into the mountain Yes under a mountain’s peak So they can know where I’ve gone hiding And perhaps one will rest with me The something in me that slipped away I don’t know its name Or if it traveled to find me as a baby But I can tell you I knew when it left Oh bury me into the mountain Yes under a mountain’s peak So they can know where I’ve gone sleeping And perhaps I’ll have company Well ever since it came back home Its face I cannot see Anyway hey, maybe you’d call it The strength behind one’s knees Oh bury me under the rainfall To show them where I’ve gone I tell you this because I consider Our friendship to be true Oh bury me into the mountain Yes under a willing mountain’s peak

Support 03:51
Lyla, where did you learn to talk like that? Leave this table, go apologize to your poor, baby sister Lyla, why don’t you take a breather? See if you can go and find support for your own baby sister Honestly, do you give the same treatment for your brothers? Now you’re hoarding love like there’s a limit on its resource Its resource Its resource

Rebel/Summer 04:27
It’s always on a full moon It’s always kinda rowdy The bands have got me beside myself And the people here are crazy Everyone I talk to could be Someone I fall in love with We’ve lost it all, we’ve lost it all And I cannot keep from lifting And I don’t quite get how much of my time I’m convinced that this cannot happen For me to feel socially capable of anything That I could ever let go Without the constant feeling That I belong at home Or that I could be here flirting with Someone pretty Well it’s always on a full moon And it’s always in the summer It fits together perfectly Unfolding synchronicities Without any kind of logic Or any of our daily shit And it feels we’re making history We have power and we have magic The words I feel are spoken And I’m not afraid to own them Or belong within my body Belong within the crowd Forget about our bodies Become one giant sound Let go of what we’re supposed to do Just hear all the hearts pound

*** "Knowing man, staying woman Be a riverbed to the world Being the world’s riverbed Of eternal, unfailing power Is to go back again To boundlessness Knowing light, staying dark Be a pattern to the world Being the world’s pattern Of eternal, inexhaustible power Is to go back again To be new-born Just so, a great carving Is done without cutting" *** (Lyrics are selected phrases from Ursula K. Le Guin's translation of Chapter 28 of the Tao Te Ching)

Louise 04:23
I don’t know why, but I like To see her in the morning I know she’s fine on her own I’m just seeing if I’ll catch her in the sun I wake her up for no reason Only to say her name out loud And for a moment, I hope she knows That I’m here, girl I’m here, girl I’m here I don’t know why, but the day begins When I see her in the morning There’s relief in my gut When I find she didn’t take off in the night She doesn’t need me, well that’s for sure And I wouldn’t curse her name is she - Hell, I’ve dreamt it too Just beyond the ridge, another life When another day is made And even when I find her in the shade I desire first in the morning To call her cuz I can’t without a smile And I love it when she doesn’t hear me Then I get to say it one more time And her sleeping still She doesn’t know that I’m here, girl I’m here

Come Closer 06:02
Come closer I have got an idea But I need you Oh I need you here I will press us in a book So we’re paper thin I will color us like light So the time will lose us When we dress in gold just like the light Time has lost us, time can’t find us When we dress in gold just like the light Time has lost us, time can’t find us Come closer

about

Recorded in a renovated church during a windstorm, Bury Me Into the Mtn is an album that stops you in your tracks. From the big backing vocals of the album’s opener to its methodically sparse closing track, she creates a musical narrative that doesn’t release its listener until the whole tale has been told.
